I now look like a Scot…

2008 August 7

…as I’m now two teeth down after my latest visit to the dentist in Aberdeen. My face is aching, the sockets keep bleeding, and the denture doesn’t fit properly so I can’t bite using my left teeth. Still, I’m sure things could be worse!

Aaaww! Photos please? I know you usually look grim, but this I gotta see. Only so that I can better visualise you at your time of need and thus empathise more effectively, you understand.

I like the sympathy you are getting lol!

I am surprised they have given you a denture so quickly, the usually wait until the socket have healed then fit it, or so I thought

A sense of humour in this situation is rather hard to find Steph in Roker.

Gosh, you mean the dentist DID something? What did you threaten them with?

Hoping some industrial-size pain killers have kicked in…

That’s exactly what I thought, Chookie!
I’m glad something happened–hopefully this is an end to some of your pain (eventually).

Hopefully this finally solves the chronic toothache. Eventually. Can imagine you’re none too happy now!

Don’t worry about the OH. The situation gets to her now and again—and she doesn’t have much of a sense of humour anyway. Too long with me! :D

Steph in Roker. It’s the next morning and my sense of humour failure has dissipated in the night. I can see the funny side now. You gave Stonehead a laugh before coming to bed. The boys and I are off to see my mum for a few days which will give him some peace in which to recuperate.

OH; I didn’t mean to tease or upset you. Hope you have a lovely break. I wouldn’t wish either tooth-pain on anyone, it’s been a form or torture used by civilisations for yeras, with good reason.

It said in the P&J this week that they are recruiting 77 more dentists for the area because of the 30k people on waiting lists and very low registration rate, so hopefully they disgraceful situation youve had to deal with will become a bit rarer.

More dentists won’t make much difference—it’s entire system that’s at fault. I’ve been “lucky” enough to have an NHS dentist since moving to Scotland, but that hasn’t meant get timely, appropriate or effective treatment.

I first saw the dentist three years ago with the initial abscess and if it had been drained and treated with antibiotics then it may not have gone further. If I’d had a root canal treatment at time, it would probably have stopped it in its tracks.

Instead, I had to wait while the abscess became worse and worse. Then it became too difficult for the dentist, who referred me to a consultant. That meant a further nine-month wait without treatment while the problem worsened further.

When I did see the consultant, one tooth had become so bad it had to come out but the second tooth could have been saved by a root canal treatment.

However, I had to wait a further seven months to see the dentist again and that meant the second tooth also became so badly infected that it had to come out. (Oh, and the first tooth actually broke below the gumline.)

Then, the dentist told me the most cost effective solution is dentures—and not only that but they’re going to be “a little uncomfortable” because they don’t cost much.

Never mind the most effective dental solution being implants or a bridge, as the consultant told me.

All that matter is financial targets and supposedly “cost effective” solutions, with short-termism prevailing over the patient’s health needs and long-term effectiveness.

One root canal treatment three years ago would have cost a lot less than all the following treatments, but short-termism means spending as little as possible now and taking the risk that the patient’s health will deteriorate as a result. After all, if they do get worse, you can delay further treatment until the next financial year when it will be part of a different budget and a different target.

Oh, and if you believe any political announcement about more dentists, police, doctors, fire officers, nurses, etc being appointed, then I have a couple of 30-acre moon farms to sell you…

    Ouch!
Hope it is all feeling a little better………

I was lucky enough to get a dentist only 6 miles distant. Unfortunately, I had to go private, but the kids are, luckily, NHS. Until they reach their majority, that is, at which time they have to go private as well. Unfortunately, Himself isn’t registered with them. They “don’t have any more places for clients” and I should “try again next year”. He’s managed to find a place in Glasgow to do the required fillings.

    Oh dear!

If they’re playing the ‘cost effective’ card, it’s probably the same as down here, where if you have kidney cancer, they won’t pay for treatment so you can happily die before they find a solution, because they consider it to be more cost effective.

Hope that, by now, the poison is draining away and you are beginning to feel better.

I am “pulling” for you … not with reference to your teeth, but in hoping that the healing is rapid, and that someday you can find a quality dentist somewhere who can do tooth implants for you. Expensive, yes, but worth it! Discover oil on your land, come to America for six months, and get it done! Well, dreams are fun … In the meantime, be well.
