What’s for dinner?

2008 July 24

It’s just after 6pm and time to start preparing dinner. My first port of call is the vegetable patch where I pick about half a kilogram of broad beans, a mixture of Super Aquadulce and Witkiem.

The root vegetable beds are next, where I combine lifting baby carrots with thinning the rows of carrots.

After that, I go for a walk out to the tattie field where I lift three plants and gather a good selection of new potatoes, all Catriona.

Once inside, I get out half a liver from one of the Berkshire pigs that we took to slaughter on Tuesday and start slicing it while the Other Half goes out to the herb garden to cut fresh parsley, chives and oregano. The Wee ‘Un scrubs potatoes and we set to work.

A short time later, the boys and I are enjoying liver and onions while the Other Half has a herb omelette (made with fresh eggs from our hens). With them we had warm broad beans tossed with olive oil, lemon juice, parsley and pepper; boiled new potatoes tossed with olive oil and herbs; and steamed baby carrots. While we eat well throughout the year, this is our favourite time for food as we can go from garden, field and hen house to the table in less than an hour, while our meat is as fresh as it can be. Pure heaven!

There’s nothing as good as home grown food.

Yum! – we are very partial to broadbeans too, the crop has started to slow-up as we had a headstart in the polytunnel so started harvesting them end of May,
they dont take much cooking do they – i havent decided yet whether a couple mins blanching or steaming is best, and the pods are good for a basis for soup as long as they are used quickly as they blacken even if left in the fridge after taking the beans out

liver – i thought i spotted a landrover and trailer I recognised turn off the A96 on tuesday morning behind me as I headed to the station, and thought that could only mean one thing – slaughter house run!

Jeez Stoney your pictures/menus always leave me feeling hungry…I don’t envy the hard life you’ve chosen, (whilst admiring you for it), but I have to say, there do appear to be certain perks…hope it was as good as it looks!
