Realities of poultry keeping

A surprising number of people think keeping poultry is straightforward, easy and nice and, if you don’t intend eating them, free of the grim side of killing animals.

If they keep hens alone, many people like the idea of keeping them into retirement and if they keep cockerels for breeding, there’s always the free ads paper with its rows of “cockerels, free to a good home”.

But sooner, rather than later, reality is going to intrude and even the most head-in-the-clouds dreamers have to get to grips with acting when a bird is sick or injured. (Although are always the few who will allow an animal to suffer rather than kill it themselves.)
