Sowing at last
18 04 2008The sun has now been shining for 3.5 days, the ground temperature has passed 6C and it’s finally time to start sowing. Of course, we can only sow plants that are suited to cooler climes for now due to frosts and cold winds, but at last I could start sowing in the salad beds.

How does our garden grow?
18 04 2008The Wee ‘Un and I emptied the last of the five muck boxes today, which is both good and bad. It’s good because we’ve shifted about three cubic metres (105 cubic feet) of well-rotted muck, weighing around five tonnes, out to where it will do most good. It’s bad because I now have to turn all the fresh muck for the first time this year as we now have an empty muck box to turn the four others into in succession. It never ends.

Spot the chickens…
18 04 2008Far too many poultry “experts” read my posts about our hens feather pecking, immediately realise our hens are bored, and promptly dash off an email advising me to hang up a couple of cabbage leaves to keep them occupied. Now, there are six hens foraging for wheat and oats in this photograph. Does anyone seriously think a couple of cabbage leaves hung from the branches are going to keep them any more occupied than they are already?
