We’ve been turning the soil in our vegetable beds for four years now, incorporating compost, well-rotted muck and rotted seaweed as we do. Despite that, some of the beds still show signs of their origins as reclaimed soil from gardens, middens, muck heaps and a horse arena. When I started forking this bed over ready for planting I quickly discovered pockets of sand and gravel with less organic matter than I’d like. The solution? Once more unto the muck…
