Phooey to snarky “rules”

A couple of people have taken me to task for not responding to their comments or not replying immediately to their emails, pointing out that blog etiquette means I’m supposed to reply and reciprocate by visiting their blog.

Well, phooey to their snarky idea of the “rules” of blogging.

I try to reply to all emails I receive but it can be a week or two before I have time to do so, thanks to the demands on my time.

Berkshire weaners for sale

Delilah\'s litter is about to weaned, which means 10 must go

Delilah’s litter of birth-notified Berkshire weaners will be seven weeks old on Thursday, which means they’re due to be weaned next week. From the litter of 12, five boars and five gilts are for sale, although at this point it appears all five gilts may have buyers. The weaners will be available for collection on the weekend of 10/11 May.

Is there a place for inorganic fertilisers?

I’m going to put my foot in it again and offend the puritan. green, organic gardening/farming brigades by challenging the notion that there is no place for inorganic fertilisers if you’re growing crops to organic principles.

The ideal—that you should be able to grow strong, healthy crops with high yields with only organic inputs—is a good mid to long-term approach, but it’s not necessarily practical or realistic in the short-term.

Looking at our example on the croft, we moved in during early spring and had to grow enough vegetables to store for our first winter.

What does it take to be a crofter?

I receive many emails and quite a few comments from people who think they’d like to take on a croft or smallholding, with a view to becoming largely or entirely self-sufficient at some point.

Some ask directly what it takes to be a crofter, some ask if I think they could do what we do and some, like Bob who commented earlier today, are more than a little shocked by our workload.

Instead of continuing to answer the questions individually, I thought it would make sense to address them in a single post.
