Spring is here
7 03 2008We’ve had the odd sunny spell over the past few months, so while it was welcome to got out to a sunshine today I didn’t think too much of it at first.
It was cool and windy early on so I had to keep my woolly hat and leather gauntlets on, but as it came time to get the boys off to nursery and school it was obvious it was building up to a spring day and not a winter one.
The Wee ‘Un and I were able to hang two loads of washing out with a reasonable expectation of it drying, while I easily decided to dispense with my skull cap when riding the Kangaroo bike in to nursery.
But the real sign that warmer weather is indeed upon us came on the ride home.
Riding up Dunnideer, I found myself sweating hard for the first time since October and had to dispense with my winter gloves at the top of the slope.
As I continued on my ride home, another half mile saw me decide to stop and dispense with my jersey as I was still too warm.
Of course, the wind is still cool and the road is still wet, but I suspect it won’t be too long before the waterproofs come off as well, being reserved for rainy days rather than worn day in, day out.
To top it off, as I peddled into the steading I found myself in the midst of a flock of randy sparrows.
Yes, spring is definitely here.

Spring is a real upper isn’t it?
I find that being more in tune with the rhythms of the year I can fully appreciate the pagan traditions around this time of the year. It’s primeval, ingrained by millennia.
I couldn’t cope with the weather you do, but then that’s one reason I’m out here and not in Scotland or north Wales.
Sparrows? We don’t see them around here much anymore even though we live very close to a large park, have a small wood close by and have a good few trees backing our garden. I guess that just isn’t enough for them.
Flipping freezing here with howling Northern winds and freezing rain
I take it that you haven’t seen the forecast for Monday then?
I hiked last weekend wearing shorts…total bliss. Now it’s snowing. Please, please, please quit teasing me, spring.
