Saying goodbye to the kids
1 03 2008
Among our jobs for today was separating Daisy, one of our Berkshire sows, from her piglets. They’re now eight weeks old, eating well on solids and Daisy was definitely getting fed up with them. However, it does take a long time and lot of persuading to move Daisy as she’s very, very poor sighted (even by pig standards) and is also monumentally thick (especially by pig standards). As a result, she’s never quite sure where she is or where she’s going, which can make her timid and unsure. She’s also the only pig I’ve see that can lose track of its feed bowl! Still, she’s pretty with a nice nature so we can forgive her other flaws.

As for the piglets, they were too busy playing tumble games and digging craters to notice “mum” had deserted them. And even they did finally notice, they soon had a big trough full of food under their noses and no big competitor for it. So, yes, they’re quite happy too.

I have a large backlog of posts to clear from the past few days, but I suspect the list is going to grow longer as our outdoor workload continues to escalate. Still, I have plenty of notes, photos, videos and drafts so I’ll try to get a few of them posted when I can.
They cover everything from sowing seed, to details of some of the herbs we grow, details of the onions we grow from seed, how we go about cleaning disinfecting the byre, and more. Plus there’s a windy bike ride video as well.
Watch this space! (But not for too long… )
Good luck, with everything. I hope you get a good ten years of breeding from each pig. Or that’s least how I have heard how long a female pig can birth.
It is good to see that you are keeping up your writings mate. I enjoy them from far away and also the news contained therein. A good mix in life is to work with ones hands and also to read and write thus stimulating and enjoying the mental processes.
Combine the results of both spheres of life and happiness is always close by. Today I am reading and writing a little, then outside I am catching up on jobs involving hand and brain (?) co-operation, which makes today a pleasant one for mme.
