Aaaaaah!
10 02 2008
Our resident beer and ale expert samples my latest home-brew offering — mangel ale. We had theorised that mangel ale had fallen out of favour since the 1700s due to the flavour not being as good as that of a malt ale, but the Other Half was unequivocal. Mangel ale is delicious.

The Other Half described it as having a pleasant and refreshing earthy taste with a hint of banana and butter, while being nicely bitter. It’s strong, about 6.5% ABV, but not overwhelmingly so. The Other Half said it was very refreshing and went well with her curry. A good result, then. I’m growing more mangels this year so we’ll be repeating this recipe and probably going up to 10-12 gallons instead of the five we made this time. Oh, and it’s from a keg, not a bottle.

What’s a mangel? Around these parts, it’s just the bit on the old-fashioned washing machine that crushes your fingers when you put sheets through it.
These are mangels. Root vegetables related to beetroot and from which the sugar beet was developed.
Ah, thanks. Peculiar looking things.
Can I swap your missus for mine please?
You’re a braver man than I!
Good to hear it works stoney. I’ll have to see if anyone around here does Mangels.
‘You’re a braver man than I!’
Stoney, dangerous talk. You have dug the fall out shelter haven’t you?
I had never heard of mangels until this last year. I did find some seeds for them in one of my seed catalogs though, so I ordered a packet this year to see if I like them.
Making beer though is not something I’ll try anytime soon, just don’t care for beer at all! Maybe ale is different, I have no idea? I do like some of the newer “malt beverages” they have lately, not sure how those relate.
That brew looks good, OH seems to be enjoying it!
