There’s no birds like snow birds

Scots Greys take almost any weather conditions in their stride and Orville is no exception. Come rain, come wind, come winter, our Scots Greys are out exploring and foraging. The ISA Browns on the other hand come out for a quick peck and then flee back into their house again.

They’re not daft though. The Scots Greys know all the most sheltered and protected places around the croft, and are always looking for new ones–which often means I have to chase them out of the hayshed, byre and workshop.

They’re also quick to spot a patch of sunlight and make a bee-line for it, then standing and enjoy a spot of sun-bathing before heading for the next bright spot. It’s very entertaining to watch them at work.

Wow dont they look fantastic in the snow?? so dramatic! Great photo of Orville!
When our chucks came out of the hen house this morning, they looked most bemused, the first proper snow some of them had ever seen, they tried to fly over it at first, then ran around as though they were standing on hot coals not snow.
My chooks are fair weathered birds, any hint of cold weather and it’s a quick bite then back to bed!
The first time Peep, our Silver-laced Wyandotte, encountered snow:
After we’d opened the coop door to let the girls into the run, she made her usual, wildly flapping leap/fall from the hutch roof. Into the snow with both feet. Less than a second later, she had re-launched herself, landing on my - very startled - daughter’s shoulder. Where she clung on, glaring down at the snow.
Since that time, she refuses to step off the entrance ramp to the hutch if there is the merest hint of snow on the floor of the coop.
