Happy birthday
25 01 2008
The Big Lad celebrated his birthday with a “request meal” – roast pork with roast potatoes, roast parsnips, roast carrots, peas and elderflower cordial. His cake was particularly special, a Coburg cake with strawberry jam filling and chocolate butter icing. Despite losing a tooth yesterday, he managed to put all of his servings away in no time.

While it’s not quite the Wee ‘Un’s birthday, we let them both open their presents from Nanna to finish the day off. They were both extremely chuffed to get copies of The Mahic Pudding and The Muddle-Headed Wombat.

For the foodies, here’s that Coburg cake in detail. The basic recipe can be found in Maw Broon’s Cookbook, although I used golden syrup instead of treacle and halved the spices so it would work better with the strawberry jam filling and chocolate butter icing. The combination worked extremely well and all of us declared it delicious. There are advantages to not being able to afford enough good quality dark chocolate to make a full-blown chocolate cake!

Happy Birthday
That is a seriously thick layer of icing!
Well, it is a cake for small boys.
The birthday deal is that they get to specify their dinner and their cake, within reason and our means. The Big Lad wanted the roast dinner with “a double-decker cake with jam and lots and lots of chocolate icing”. I think I delivered!
The Wee ‘Un’s request is for pasta—specifically pasta with meat—plus “a big fluffy cake with jam” and “vanilla butter all over”. I’ll make him a butter sponge cake with all the doodads.
Yummy!
Happy birthday big lad
Happy birthday boys! The cake looks yummy and the icing is absolutely brilliant; So thick I can almost taste it from down under.
I look forward to seeing the Wee ‘un’s cake in a day or two.
Happy Birthday and Happy Robbie Burns Day , too.

Looked like a seriously yummy cake - it was Tony’s birthday last week & although he’s a few years older than you, he asked me for a caterpillar cake…..wish I’d taken a photo, now!
