All I have to do is mention pig time…

Come 2pm on a weekday and the Wee ‘Un knows it’s pig time. Most of the time, that’s all it takes to get him into his wellies, waterproof overtrousers and his other outdoor gear so he can be a proper farmer. Then we go out together to see what needs to be done.

Almost ready to eat

The locally owned and run bakery in the village, Jack Cooper, has been sold to a much larger business J G Ross with dire consequences for the quality of the baked goods.

The range of cakes and “fancy pieces” has shrunk, the range of breads has shrunk and the range of pies has shrunk.

On top of that, the quality has plummeted (faux cream, bleuch), while all the stock is now made elsewhere and brought here by van. It was baked on site. Read the rest of this entry »





Time to start gearing up

The growing season is just around the corner, which means the preparations and hard work kick off in earnest over the next fortnight.

First, though, comes the seed order.

We start by working through the seed that we already have in store, a mixture of saved seed from last year’s crops plus excess seeds from the previous two years’ orders (we always keep enough seed for two seasons). Read the rest of this entry »
