
Two questions that frequently arise when discussing what we do are “what is a croft?” and “are you really a crofter?”, with the latter often being negatively reversed into “you’re not really a crofter, are you?”.
The answers to these questions are simultaneously simple and complex, and are laden down with a vast amount of social, historical and political baggage.
At its simplest, a croft is simply a small, enclosed area of land used originally for subsistence agriculture, and usually with the crofter’s house on or near the land.
