The trike proved to be very well built

The cabin took the initial impact of the van, then came my shoulder. When the bike toppled over, the cabin again took the initial impact, followed by me and then the end of the rear axle. Fortunately, the trike has hub gears and these have a protective steel bar to guard the change mechanism and this appears to have prevented damage to the axle or gear change. I’ve yet to give the trike a thorough check, but these appears to be the main locations of the damage.

How visible were we?

From the rear

One of the concerns the police had about Wednesday’s crash was how visible I was on the Winther Kangaroo trike, a question that a couple of other people have asked as well. Fair enough. It was 11.10am, the sun was shining and visibility was very good. The rear LED lamp was on, the bike has reflectors, reflective stripes on the cabin, reflective tyre stripes, pedal reflectors and additional daylight visibility sticks, and I was wearing a cyclist’s reflective belt. The trike is also quite large, very unusual and has a lot of road presence.
