One of my favourite sections of the Self-sufficientish forums is 101 Things, which currently has a thread on “You know you’re townie when…”

The thread really fired the imaginations of the Other Half and I as we’ve lived in both cities and the countryside.

You’re cycling too fast…

I’ve now done about 1,500 miles on the Kangaroo trike, which means I know how it handles and can ride it fairly hard with confidence.

The only problem being that I had not thought through the implications of being able throw a hefty trike around with relative ease.

Making chow-chow

Peppers, onions and cabbage

Our order of almost 100 new jars finally arrived, so I had to get to work yesterday and start filling them. With the cabbages approaching their peak in the garden, I decided to pick a couple and make a batch of chow-chow - a type of relish that’s excellent on home-made burgers, with boiled pork and potatoes, or served with cold meats.

Time to venture out

Peggy and her brood explore the steading

We let Peggy, our Scots Grey bantam, and her brood out into the steading for the first time yesterday. The chicks are now large enough to be out with the handful of adult birds that we allow to free-range inside the steading, while Peggy is more than capable of defending her chicks against any unwanted attention - despite her size! She’s our only Scots Grey bantam - the other Scots Greys are full-size light fowl - and is kept as she’s a good broody hen, as well as a good teacher for the chicks.
