More wee piggies…

Dinner time!

At last, one stood still for more than three seconds.

Time for bed.

Delilah enjoys a child-free moment! We definitively sexed the piglets today for entry in our herdbook, confirming that we have six gilts and five boars. It’s quite easy telling male from female, but until you have a spare pair of hands and a can of spray marker the piglets enjoy milling about so you can’t do an accurate count of males and females.

That’s a good mix of boars and gilts, will you keep any of the piglets to breed from, or will they all be sold?
We’ll keep two boars to finish as porkers, possibly three if enough people want the pork.
One of the remaining boars is very well marked so we’ll see how he develops over the next 10 weeks as he may turn out to be a really good pedigree boar.
The remaining two boars could be for eating or breeding, depending on how they go.
None of the gilts is as well marked as the best boar, but all look to be potentially good for breeding as well as eating.
We have a proven sow ordered from another line and she’ll be in pig to a champion boar, so we’re hoping to get one good boar and one good gilt from her to keep for breeding.
I enjoyed reading this post. The piglets look lovely. i am hoping that my gilts will farrow in October.

They’re all beautiful, but Mum is still the best of the lot. Well done lovely girl!
Congratulations - they are beautiful!
