While working behind the trailer in the steading today, I heard a couple of men walking up the road on the other side of the drystone dyke.

They were chatting as they walked and I quite clearly heard one say to the other: “There’s a pair of nutters live there…”

The overhauled trailer

After a few days work, our Bateson livestock trailer is not only looking much better but it’s also safer to tow and easier to load. When we bought the trailer last year, it had clearly seen better days but was still very useable with sound metalwork and a solid floor, it had just been rewired and a new jockey wheel had been fitted. But it was clear that the wheels and tyres would need replacement within 12 months, the brakes were barely safe and the wooden ramp was rotten. So, after squeezing our budget for 12 months and with some of the proceeds from selling the Land Rover Discovery, we splashed out on parts, fastenings and varnish - the wood for the ramp was salvage, of course!

Saving energy, but not enough…

The quarterly electricity bill has arrived, revealing both good news and bad.

The good news is that we’ve managed to shave a further 12.4 percent off our electricity useage compared with the same quarter last year.

Strenuous efforts to reduce waste saw us cut our useage from 1583kw/h to 1386kw/h. Read the rest of this entry »
