I may be full of myself…
30 07 2007
…but at least I have good reason to feel reasonably satisfied with what we achieve on the croft. Having spent three days hoeing the potato field - which extends up the hill to the right - I was quite amused to discover that Andy on the Hilux Surf forum thinks I’m full of myself. Well, in justification I’d say it’s because… …I don’t drive a Toyota Hilux, I drive a Land Rover Defender!

Good to see some web banter! Of course the Surf runs on veg oil @59p a litre so we’ll take the moral high ground there and lets face it…….
Life’s too short to fix Land Rovers!!!!
I’ll continue to read and enjoy your blog as I take my first tentative steps in smallholding. Ta,
Ballibeg
LR’s 200 TDi and 300 TDis do run on veg oil. And I don’t fix my Landie, I recreate it!
I like it!

Why don’t you blokes get a real vehicle….. like my ‘92 Nissan Navarra ute! Now this a ute to fall in love with, tough, you said it, kangaroos and steers just bounce off it; it handles Australia’s dusty, rural dirt roads with aplomb and only needs cleaning annually or thereabouts.
Its splendid design includes the ability to keep the driver awake as its firm suspension finds every dip in the road and the heater would roast a pork chop easily with its generous heat.
Yes, 250,000 km and it is just about “run in”. All this and only 2WD too. A man’s vehicle if ever there was one. Hook a seven-foot trailer on behind and fill “em both up with logs on a rough and steep gravel road and see this how this real ute can go.
Man’s best friend (Tiger) loves it to, as it saves him lots of walking. When I park alongside your sister’s gross Toyota Land Cruiser the Cruiser cringes enviously at a real man’s ute/vehicle!
A Nissan Navara… Hmm, I know of one that tried to tow a Land Rover 101 Forward Control on a trailer. As the 101 rolled on to the trailer and the weight went on to the tow bar, the Navara’s chassis snapped behind the cab and it bent up into a A-shape. Great cars!!!
As for keeping clean, we washed, cut back and polished the right side and bonnet of the Defender today. The rest will have to wait - probably until next year…
ooppss - apologies for re- that comment, I take it back, what I meant that this site is pretty focused on one person and croft rather than being general,
and will edit my post accordingly
and… I drive a 4runner…..which is far better than a Hilux surf!!! (same thing but UK model)
have seen your landy and croft, impressed as often pass by
have you tried making proper ale yet - using grains and hops rather than kits?
sorry for the offense…
Andy
I was vastly more amused than offended!
phew… now where is blabber-mouth ballibeg gone…
i will drop by sometime with some of my homebrew ale by way of aplology
as I shoot on several farms in area
Are you aware that as of July this year, you can make 2500 litres of bio-diesel per annum completely tax free? It can be made from waste or virgin oil, but has to go through the proper conversion (sodium hydroxide added?). If anyone wants the link to Customs and Revenues page, let me know. I’ll dig it out. I recently got myself an old defender (19J TD engine), just for moving stuff and pulling a trailer, ain’t they fun to drive!!
