Out with the second car

The Other Half, the boys and the Discovery

It’s taken five months longer than I would have liked, but the Other Half’s Land Rover Discovery 300 TDi has now moved on to pastures new. It’s not being replaced by another car but, as I’ve written earlier, by a Winther Kangaroo trike, which is already a familiar sight in the village. People often tell us that it’s not possible to do without a second car, but if we can manage with a single car while living in the public transport free countryside, a couple of miles from the village, then their excuse had better be a good one! And don’t forget, we have animals to transport, livestock feed to collect, a job that’s 16 miles away (the OH), nursery and school age children, and more. We already walk and cycle a lot so we’re not going to gain much in fitness, but we will cut our use of fossil fuels and cut our bills by at least £200 a month. Does anyone else feel up to the challenge?

We have also parted with our second car and are reaping the benefits. Our situation is different in that we live on the edge of a city. We do have public transport available but it is expensive, erratic and the bus routes never seem to go where we need to go. However, we made our choice to part with the second car and are managing well without it.

Go for it; if only more people had the courage to accept such challenges and changes.
