Our main flock of hens, which are kept for eggs, have been pecking each other’s feathers out for several weeks.

It’s more a habit than diet, boredom or pests, starting when a couple of pullets had a late moult and the other hens began pecking the loose feathers.

Next thing we knew, they’d all decided feather pecking was an entertaining way of passing the evenings while roosting in their house. Read the rest of this entry »





Bang! Flap, flap, flap

Yes, the Other Half’s Land Rover Discovery has thrown another hissy fit and snapped its new V-belt.

I was taking the Wee ‘Un into playgroup just now, but as I was driving through town there was a loud bang, followed by a flap, flap sound.

No picture in the attic for me…

My Dad recently sent me a packet of old photos and papers that caused the boys much amusement when they arrived yesterday.

In fact, after looking at several photos of me, the Big Lad even asked what I’d done to myself to look so bad now!!!!!

Not content with that, the cheeky devil then picked out a photo of a former girlfriend and declared her “too young for someone like you”! Read the rest of this entry »





More rain

We’ve had another good spell of rain overnight and this morning, with another 300 litres of water collected in the butts.

It’s exactly the sort of rain the land needs as it’s light, steady and lasts for several hours, allowing the water to soak in instead of running off.

Of course, it does mean the water butts won’t come anyway near full, even over a few days, but there’s still plenty to meet the daily needs of the pigs and chickens plus leave some to spare. Read the rest of this entry »
