Yes, we had another day of planting after an enjoyable day off yesterday.
Today, we returned to the root vegetable beds to plant 14 rows of carrots (six of Flakkee, two of Chantenay and five of James Scarlet) and three rows of parsnips (two of Guernsey Half Long and one of Student).
We also planted out more of our gourmet onions, with 22 Rossa de Milano seedlings going in.
It doesn’t sound like much, but the beds have to have their final preparation, the rows have to be marked out, the seed drilled, the rows lightly covered with a fine mix of sand and compost, and then the seeds watered in.
The seedlings have to be soaked in a dilute solution of seaweed concentrate while their planting spaces are dug out with a trowel. They’re then planted and watered in.
With the planting out of the way, we then continued our preparation work on the other beds and in the vegetable field, before marking out the space for a new pig field that will be fenced later in the week.
We also found time to come in with the boys and spend an enjoyable hour making giant bugs out of toilet rolls, spray paint lids, wire hangers (which make excellent wings when covered with paper) and other odds and ends.
The Big Lad had a good giggle as he imagined his giant bug sneaking out into the vegetable patch to eat everything!
