Chickens are often one of the early steps that people take in seeking to become more self-sufficient.

The aspiring smallholder or backyard chicken keeper thinks, rightly, that there’s something to be said for going out in the morning and collecting a couple of warm, fresh-laid eggs to have for breakfast.

The blog is back

I’m reopening the blog again after a month’s hiatus while I decided what do with it given some issues that had arisen. I’m not going to edit past posts as it will take too long to do, so what’s been written already will stand as it is.

There will be a change in direction for future posts as I’ll be keeping out any mention of the wider families of myself and the Other Half.

This will mean some of our motivations will have to go unexplained, the sources of some our skills and knowledge will go unacknowledged, some contributions will remain uncredited and unexplained, and there will be gaps in the posts when we have people visiting.

Doris and her litter explore their new home.

Doris, one of our pedigree Berkshire sows, and her litter of 10 piglets were moved from the farrowing pen to an outside pen today. As soon as we started removing the piglets two at a time and carrying them out, Doris realised it was time for “walkies” and began nudging at the gate, ready to be let out. She and Delilah are both easy to handle, so we don’t need to set up temporary runs to lead them out. They happily walk to one side of me while I carry a bucket with a handful of sow rolls to bring them back on track should they find something diverting on the walk.
