Wanted: a double bed!

28 02 2007

With my mum coming to stay for a few months from June we’ve been looking for a cheap or free double bed that can be sufficiently broken down to carried upstairs and low enough to fit under the eaves.

But after weeks of scouring ScotAds, we were getting nowhere while no one has offered a double bed on Freecycle for a while.

I did post a Wanted notice on AberdeenshireWest Freecycle, but that prompted a message from the moderator advising people not to reach for the moon.

So, if there’s anyone from Aberdeenshire or parts nearby that has an old but useable double bed (possibly with clean mattress) that they want rid of then a good home awaits!

We have to be a bit picky, which is probably what prompted the Freecycle reminder, but it’s due to the nature of our house.

The bed has to be an old-fashioned double to fit in the room, it has to break down into small enough parts to come up a narrow stair and around corners, and it needs to be low (or capable of having legs sawn short) to fit under the eaves on one side.

If anyone has something suitable, then I’d love to hear from them.

if you get two fire doors or other large flat strong doors that are cheap you could screw four equally sawn two by fours onto the cornors of each of the doors then sit them side by side and put the right sized matress on top(queen sized maybe)

i did this with one fire door and it works well as a low table or bed

Have you thought about one of these normal bed height air beds?

Can you not make one Stoney?? Me and my friend used to make them at uni for people (for a profit) Is it that you don’t have the time?

Yes, I could make one but it comes down to time and materials. I already have a lengthy backlog of things to make or complete, plus my store of salvaged materials is shrinking. (More and more people and businesses want cash for things they would otherwise be throwing out or burning. Pallets, for instance.)

I don’t know whether to comfort you about your freecycle group or be jealous! Round here, people are for ever asking for ipods, laptops, cars, you name it. :/

We just stayed with friends in Florida who had one of those double blow up beds. Really they are very good. DH is 21 stone and I’m 12 stone…..we managed ok! Just make sure to top it up each night if used for more than one night!
