Welcome to 2007!
As a follow-up to my New Year’s message last night, I thought I’d give an example of putting my words into practice.
A couple of weeks ago, I bought a bottle of rum, ostensibly to make our Christmas puddings and cakes.
But I also had in mind a New Year’s Eve treat for the Other Half. I can’t nip out and buy her flash presents - or even a decent haircut - but I can do little things that mean something and make her smile.
As it turned out, I’ve been sick for a couple of days and she’s been carrying the load so I thought I’d sneak out to the kitchen and prepare her treat early, before I crashed into bed for the night.
Now, for what I’m about to describe you really need a blender or insulated cocktail shaker, but a whisk or food processor (as I used) will do the job.
Add one measure of rum, one of brandy (actually, I had none but there was a splash of cognac left so I used that) and a raw egg to the mixing bowl. Pulse well.
Place half a pint of milk in the microwave and heat until almost boiling, remove and stir in one teaspoon of caster sugar.
Then, blitz the spirits and egg again while steadily pouring in the hot milk and sugar.
Pour the hot egg nog into a warmed jug for serving.
To finish the treat, I added a couple of slices of home-made Christmas cake to the cup and saucer, then carried the whole lot through to the Other Half.
The perfect compliment to a DVD (Memento), a roaring fire, a comfy sofa and a couple of blankets.
And yes, it did make her smile!

Aww Stoney, that’s lovely, made me smile too! It’s always the small personal things that make the best presents.
As a lover of egg nog I can’t wait to try this.
I like the unintentional pun “can’t nip out” ….. or was it intentional?
The way to a girls heart is undoubtedly through the nice little touches.
