When commenting, don’t be too brief!

15 12 2006

A couple of people have emailed to ask why their comments did not appear on the blog - especially as they made favourable remarks.

It turns out the missing comments had been caught by the Akismet spam filter, almost certainly because the language and syntax used were similar to comment spam.

So, if you want to leave a comment, don’t just say “Nice blog”, “Great post, I agree”, “I’m with you on this”. These phrases turn up in a lot of spam.

Instead, please be a little more detailed and more specific in your response.

Also, don’t put more than two links in your comment as I have the filter set to delete comments with multiple links as lot of spam is made up of a series of links.

I’m not going to change the filter to send comments with multiple links to moderation as there is so much spam (53 in the past two hours).

And finally, if your IP address is on Akismet’s list of spammers, then your comment will definitely be blocked.

I hope this helps.

I think I’ve had two items of comment spam ever. I wonder if my blog host filters them automatically.
