Another disgusting job!

There are times when crofting seems to revolve around jobs that involve being cold and wet, with your arms and legs deeply immersed in slimy stuff, and a thick, reeking miasma rising about you.

Today was one of those days.

Plasma TVs in the spotlight

The BBC has finally picked up the fact that plasma televisions consume considerable amounts of electricity, which has serious implications when you consider that 70 million older TVs are set to be junked over the next decade.

But as always, the media is late to the party.

When I studied the electricity consumption of our old CRT television, I compared it with a typical plasma TV and found the plasma television would consume 6.73 times our existing TV’s energy consumption. Read the rest of this entry »





Building a muck heap

After all that philosophising about hope, I thought I should bring myself back to earth with a hefty dollop of muck shoveling.

One of the byproducts of keeping animals is that you end up with very large amounts of manure, which can be a major source of pollution if not handled correctly.

But that need not be the case as correctly used manure can restore fertility to the soil, improve soil quality and reduce dependency on synthetic fertilisers. Read the rest of this entry »
