Wasted opportunities

Despite all the words, pledges and treaties, the world’s governments are singularly failing to do anything to curb carbon dioxide emissions and slow global warming.

On Monday, the BBC reported that “the rise in humanity’s emissions of carbon dioxide has accelerated sharply”.

An analysis by the Global Carbon Project found emissions had been rising by less than one percent a year up to 2000, but have now acclerated and are rising at 2.5% per year.

The project found that 7.9 billion tonnes of carbon passed into the atmosphere last year. In 2000, the figure was 6.8 billion tonnes.

And while the GCP’s home page states the attention of the scientific community, policymakers and the general public is now focusedon the rising concentration of greenhouse gases, focus on the problem does not mean anyone is prepared to take any immediate and effective action.

We, as both individuals and communities, have to demand action from those in authority (and replace them if they will not act) and take immediate action ourselves.

Contact your local MP, MSP and other elected representatives. Demand that they pressure their parties to take action.

Sign petitions like the UK Carbon Rationing e-petition, join local marches, protests and rallies, and support groups who are prepared to act.

And take action to cut your own consumption now.
