Topping trees

I decided it was time to tackle the sitka spruce that form a windbreak to the north and west of the vegetable garden today.

Most are are more than 20 feet high with a few topping 30 feet and they’re now blocking the sunlight from the vegetables.

I’ve already topped a few on the north side by using the Land Rover as a scaffolding platform, but I couldn’t use that trick today. Read the rest of this entry »




A time of inadequatarianism

Watching the way Western governments behave towards their people, towards people from outside their nation states, and towards less powerful nation states is not an edifying experience.

Western governance, particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, has developed a strong totalitarian streak.

By that I don’t mean the governments of those countries are becoming more fascist, communist or any other interpretations of particular political ideologies. Read the rest of this entry »
