End in sight for incandescent light bulbs

It’s been a long time coming and it may take another three years to take full effect, but at last it looks like the end is in sight for the incandescent light bulb.

BBC News has reported that “Bulbs must be efficient ‘by 2009′”, and that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has been talking to retailers and manufacturers about replacing “inefficient” goods before new minimum European standards come in.

Campaigners have long fought for a ban on incandescent bulbs which have shorter lifespans than modern light bulbs and use more electricity to produce the same amount of light. Read the rest of this entry »




Another hard day

One of the most common misconceptions about smallholding and crofting is that it’s a hobby, something that you can drop in and out of while leading “the good life”.

In fact, it’s backbreakingly hard work and, if you rely on your efforts to feed you and pay some bills, then you get no respite for bad weather, ill-health or just plain tiredness.

You have to get up early every morning; you have to do all the regular chores; you have to do all the other jobs that come along; and you have to do it regardless of what nature throws at you. Read the rest of this entry »
