Dinner without electricity

27 10 2006

The lights go out.

Gales with wind gusts of up to 90mph knocked down the power lines as we were halfway through cooking dinner on Thursday evening.

No, it’s definitely not cooked.

It’s not often the head chef has to check his meals with an oil lamp! While the electricity had gone off, there was enough heat contained in the heavy iron cookware to keep things going and then be finished off on the old coal-fired range.

A candlelit dinner.

The Other Half and the two boys enjoy dinner in the snug. With the central heating knocked out by the power cut, the snug became the warmest room in the house thanks to the old range.

Victorian-style lighting.

The joys of pre-electric lighting.
