Alarming weakening in Gulf Stream

Many scientists have criticised the disaster film The Day After Tomorrow for suggesting that global warming could shut down the Gulf Stream in a very short space of time, leading to a catastrophic cooling of northern Europe and America.

Now I’d agree that much of the film was Hollywood hype combined with bad science but evidence has now emerged that the Gulf Stream did, in fact, shut down for 10 days in November 2004.

Electricity back after 20 hours

We’re back in the 21st century again with the electricity restored at 5pm.

But, as is typical of the Other Half and myself, when the lights suddenly came back on we were rather disappointed! “Oh,” she said, “I was looking forward to another night cooking on the open fire and eating in the snug.”

Dinner without electricity

The lights go out.

Gales with wind gusts of up to 90mph knocked down the power lines as we were halfway through cooking dinner on Thursday evening.
