I often write about the need for people to take personable responsibility, to oppose corporate globalisation, to reject consumerism, to renounce infinite growth and to end unsustainable and immoral exploitation.

But the real enemy is none of these.

The real enemy is cynicism. Cynicism, especially our own, will drag us down and destroy us more than anything else. Read the rest of this entry »

First fire of the year

It’s a lovely, damp day today and to celebrate the falling temperatures we held the ceremonial fire lighting ceremony.

The open fire in the old Victorian range has now settled now to a nice, hot glow and the boys are happily esconced in the snug with their books and the Other Half’s computer.

The Other Half is also celebrating the completion of the last of her study for the year. She’s been doing the final year of a masters degree and also doing the Scottish Chartered Teacher Qualification (effectively a second masters). Read the rest of this entry »





“Green” taxes a licence for rich polluters

A London council has announced plans to link the cost of residents’ parking permits to the amount of CO2 emitted by their cars.

Richmond upon Thames Borough Council has proposed a sliding scale of charges for parking permits based on the government’s car tax bands based on vehicle emissions.

Band A, which would be free, would consist of electric cars. Cars in Band B would be subject to a 50% reduction and cars in band C would get a 10% discount. Read the rest of this entry »





Yet another sell-out

A Scottish politician has withdrawn proposals to charge a 10p levy on plastic carrier bags because “a range of retailers including Ikea, B&Q, the Co-op and Tesco were all now committed to bag reduction across the UK”.

Mike Pringle MSP had put the proposed Environmental Levy Bill to the Scottish Parliament only to have it rejected by the Environment Committee.
