I made sticky buns…

Look what I made

The Wee ‘Un was in the supermarket with us on Wednesday when he spotted some packets of iced buns.

Unlike many children, however, the Wee ‘Un didn’t ask if we could buy them. Instead, he asked if he could make some at home.

So today, we set to work to make some sticky buns for afternoon tea.

The Wee ‘Un’s recipe uses a breadmaker to speed things up and take out the hard work of kneading, but otherwise it’s all down to him except the actual baking.

Wee ‘Un Sticky Buns

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp quick acting yeast
  • 250g strong white flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp soft brown sugar
  • 25g butter
  • 1 tbsp powdered milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 100ml water
  • 100g mixed dried fruit (the sort with peel in it)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Icing sugar

Method

  1. Put the yeast in the bottom of the breadmaker’s mixing tin, then the flour and then the sugars, butter, powdered milk, salt, egg and water. Place the tin in the breadmaker.
  2. If your breadmaker has a separate container for fruit, place the dried fruit and cinnamon in that. If not, you’ll have to add the fruit and cinnamon after the first stage of mixing.
  3. Select the breadmaker’s “raisin dough” setting or similar. This will take about 2.5-3 hours.
  4. When the dough making cycle has finished, remove the dough to a floured workbench and divide into eight equal sized balls. (This is the Wee ‘Un’s favourite bit!)
  5. Place the balls on floured baking trays, cover with a clean cloth and allow to prove for at last an hour.
  6. Brush the buns with milk and place in an oven preheated to 220C (190-200C fan force) for 15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oven and placing on a wire rack to cool.
  8. When cool, mix up a thin icing with icing sugar and a little water. Drizzle over the top of the sticky buns.
  9. Serve the buns with homemade lemonade (or coffee if the grownups are so-minded).

As the Wee ‘Un says, “They’re deeee-licious!”.
