Heaviest snowfalls so far

3 03 2006

Norman from across the road used his snowblower to clear a swathe of snow from the hardstanding in the steading yesterday.

It was prescient of him as we had so much snow overnight that it filled all the cleared areas to a height greater than yesterday after three days of snow.

40cm of snowThe flat areas of the steading now have at least 40cm of snow cover, while the drifts are between 1.5 and 2 metres deep.

I spent about an hour this morning digging out new paths to the woodstore, the hayshed, the byre and the road before trudging through the very deep snow behind the buildings to feed and water the animals.

I’d cleared a large patch for the pigs yesterday and put straw down for them, but this was completely covered this morning while their trough was buried under about six inches of snow.

On the plus side, the snow insulated the trough so there was only a thin layer of ice to clear before the gilts could have a drink.

As for the chickens, they’re increasingly indignant at being kept in for much of the day and half of them made a break for freedom when I opened the door to give them their food. However, I persuaded them to stay inside with a bit of arm flapping - although I’ll clear some snow away from their run later so they can have a peck around.
