Scots Greys critically endangered

A letter from the Rare Breeds Survival Trust arrived today and it included a pamphlet on the most endangered breeds.

It turns out there are now less than 100 Scots Grey breeding hens left, which is even fewer than I thought.

Mind you, it’s hardly surprising if other breeders have the same problems as we do - lots of infertile eggs and deaths in shell, a majority of males from those eggs that do hatch, and many of the females dying before reaching maturity. Read the rest of this entry »





Still fencing

The helpers take a break from the fencingIt’s been another mild, sunny day so it was a good opportunity to get some more fencing done.

With the bitumen dry, I carried 15 posts up the hill and began setting them out along the roadside boundary.

The first task was to set out a string line from the strainers at the ends of the section, but this was not as straightforward as it could be as the fence curves here.

What I do is drive in a stob at the midpoint between the two strainers and then another two at the midpoints between the middle stob and the strainers, before looping the stringline around them. Read the rest of this entry »
